My Story as Deaf
I live in a world that cannot see the color of sound. I experienced an unexpected trauma and became postlingually deaf. Hence, the doctor suggested I undergo cochlear implant surgery. The cochlear implant system that fits on my head was the only hope to restore my hearing sensation and prevent me from losing the ability to speak. So, at a young age, I successfully underwent cochlear implant surgery.
Now, I have a fixed CI system in my left ear and a digital hearing aid in my right ear, but still, the timbre is not always clear to me. This is because neither the fixed CI system nor the digital hearing aid can truly restore the original sound sensation. Sometimes I still make mistakes in recognizing voices, which leads to some difficulties in communication. I need to watch everyone’s mouth movements to lip-read. If you find that I have misrepresented the subject, it is very likely that I did not hear correctly or misunderstood something through lip-reading. I hope that everyone who knows me can understand this.Nevertheless, I am still the Aunt Ninja that you all know… I am still a flower that blooms every day. This flower will not be swayed by its own shortcomings and difficulties that prevent it from blooming. I am grateful that on this journey of life, I have learned to be patient, strong, and to understand the compassion of others. I have decided to make my life the brightest light, to live full of excitement, and always live with my heart. I strive to be positive and to be an excellent OKU (Orang Kurang Upaya, or people with disabilities).
Since then, I have dedicated myself to Special Needs Educator. I teach Special Needs students who have the same life experiences as me. I share with them the sunshine, the rain, the soil, the planting, and even the pests, and guide them through the good times and challenges of school life.
In my classroom, I strive to create an environment where every student feels valued and understood. I incorporate various teaching methods to cater to their unique needs, ensuring that each students can learn and grow at their own pace. We use sign language, visual aids, and interactive activities to make learning both effective and fun.
I encourage my students to embrace their identities and to take pride in their achievements, no matter how small. We celebrate every milestone, from mastering a new sign to excelling in a subject they once found difficult. I also teach them the importance of resilience and adaptability, sharing my own experiences to show that challenges can be overcome with determination and a positive attitude.
I hope my Special Needs students can also be strong reeds that can withstand wind and rain, never break, and gallop forward bravely! My ultimate goal is to empower these young minds to become confident, independent individuals who are ready to face the world with courage and optimism. I influence them also to be the flowers that bloom every day, regardless of the obstacles they may encounter.
In addition to teaching, I advocate for greater awareness and inclusion in all aspects of society. I work with local organizations to promote accessibility and support services for OKU people. By raising awareness and fostering understanding, we are able to create a more inclusive and compassionate world for everyone. Through my dedication to Special Needs Education and Advocacy, I aim to leave a lasting impact on the lives of my students and the broader community. I want to be a beacon of hope and a source of inspiration, showing that with perseverance and a positive mindset, we are ABLE to achieve great things.
Through the days that have gone by, I have deeply understood what the Bible says: “You crown your years with grace, and your ways drip with fatness.” This is my story. Even though the colour of sound is forever missing in my life, that’s not a big deal as long as I am a blooming flower, and I believe that my story of life journey will continue wonderfully.
